Industrial Stretch Wrap Guide: Choosing the Right Film

Gauge vs. Micron Yield 300% Pre-Stretch Mastery Load Security Engineering

Matching the right stretch film to horizontal stretch wrapping machines or vertical stretch wrapping machines is a precision science. Every film we supply is engineered for Total System Compatibility, ensuring resin molecular alignment with your machine’s pre-stretch settings.

Most facilities fall into the "Price-Per-Roll Trap," ignoring that inferior films require more revolutions to achieve stability. Our high-performance co-extrusion allows for aggressive down-gauging - lowering cost-per-pallet while hitting 300% yield potential.

1. Manufacturing: Cast Clear vs. Blown Clear

Manufacturing process defines the film's "personality." Cast Clear Film is the industry workhorse - quiet and transparent. Blown Duty Film is the heavy-hitter - sticky and nearly impossible to puncture.

Selection Guide Cast Clear Blown Duty
Primary Use Retail / Standard Pallets Metal / Lumber / Stone
Barcode Clarity Crystal Clear Hazy / Opaque
Cling Type One-Sided (Clean) Dual-Sided (High Tack)

2. Technical Specs: The Gauge & Micron Table

Understanding film thickness is critical for **Cost-Per-Pallet** calculations. High-performance films allow for "downgauging" - using a thinner, more engineered film to achieve the containment of traditional 80-gauge wraps.

Gauge (Mil) Micron (µm) Application / Load Profile
60-70 Gauge 15.2 - 17.8 µm Performance Film: Light/Uniform loads
80 Gauge 20.3 µm Industrial Standard: Multi-purpose
90 Gauge 22.9 µm High-Tension: Rigid containment
100-120 Gauge 25.4 - 30.5 µm Heavy Duty: Machinery & Construction
150+ Gauge 38.1+ µm Extreme Duty: Steel Beams & Rebar

3. Engineering for Load Profiles

Profile A: Uniform

Stable, boxed loads with no protrusions. Ideal for Cast Performance Films and high-speed automated wrapping.

Profile B: Irregular

Staggered layers or sharp corners. Requires higher Puncture Resistance and mid-range gauge thickness.

Profile C: Extreme

Heavy machinery, steel beams, or jagged edges. Requires Blown Duty Film and maximum containment force.

4. Roll Dimensions & Machine Compatibility

Standard orbital machine rolls are 10 inches wide, though our custom-built wrappers can be engineered for larger formats. It is critical to match the roll capacity to your machine's carriage - if the roll is too heavy or the core is mismatched, the pre-stretch rollers will not engage correctly. You can compare ring diameters and roll compatibility here to ensure a perfect fit for your specific machine series.

  • Standard Width: 10" (Orbital) to 20" (Vertical)
  • Standard Length: 3,500' to 5,000' per roll
  • Custom Sizing: Available for oversized industrial applications

Fitment Warning

Using a roll length beyond your carriage's weight rating can cause motor burnout and irregular tensioning.

5. Specialty Environmental Protection

UVI (Sun Resistance)

Prevents sun-rot for pallets stored outdoors. Standard UVI protects for 3-6 months; Extended UVI lasts up to 1 year.

Color & Security

Opaque black and white films hide valuable cargo. Use color-coded tints for "QC Hold" or "Ready to Ship" organization.

VCI & Anti-Static

Integrated additives protect bare metal from rust (VCI) or sensitive electronics from static discharge (ESD).

Storage Advisory: To maintain optimal tack (cling) and elasticity, store your film in a cool, dry environment. Extreme heat can cause "blocking" (rolls sticking to themselves), while extreme cold can reduce the film's initial stretch performance.

6. Color-Coding & Security Wrap

Color film serves two primary purposes: Organization and Security. Opaque wraps (Black/White) prevent "prying eyes" from identifying high-value electronics or machinery during LTL transit, effectively acting as a theft deterrent.

Film Color Logistical Application
Opaque Black/White High-Value Security / Concealment
Red / Green QC Status (Rejected vs. Approved)
Blue / Yellow Zone-Based Warehouse Routing
Transparent Standard Inventory / Barcode Scanning

7. The "Hidden" Metrics: Optimization Pillars

The 300% Yield Factor

If your machine isn't hitting 250-300% pre-stretch, you are throwing money away. Our films thin out without breaking, reducing plastic waste by up to 60%.

Containment Force

Thickness (Gauge) does not always equal strength. Modern "Performance" films provide higher load-holding force than traditional cheap wraps.

Cling vs. Slip

One-sided cling ensures your loads stick to themselves - but not to the pallet next to them. This prevents "Pallet Locking" during unloading and transit.

The Cost-of-Yield Calculator

With Trend-Series Wrappers hitting 300% pre-stretch, a standard 5,000' roll yields 15,000' of usable film. You are effectively tripling your inventory coverage.

Eco-Efficiency

Our down-gauging technology allows for 25% less plastic by weight with zero loss in containment. Engineering better film is the most direct path to sustainable logistics.

The Professional Advantage

Generic "101" guides focus on hand wrap. We focus on Industrial Throughput. If your facility wraps 50+ pallets a day, our engineering audit can save you thousands in annual material costs.
